Stop Maine Coon Biting: Quick, Proven, Easy, and Fun!

When your Maine Coon bites you, they are playing with you as they would play with their siblings. They are always checking your pain tolerance! When they play with siblings/pride members, when the play gets too rough, the others will communicate that with high pitched sounds. Because, when they do not hear those sounds, they will assume all responses (pushing away, stern "no"'s, and especially ignoring) are all part of you playing with them.

The other reason for biting you is trying to get your attention and show love — it is called a "love bite"! Cats do it to each other when they groom and if they do it too hard, the other cat will hiss. This type of bite is a soft gentle nibble, never meant to hurt, only meant to show their love for you!

  1. When your Maine Coon bites, make a prolonged, loud, high pitched "aaaaaoooowwww" sound (the higher the pitch the better) as though you are in pain, and look at them with hurt in your eyes.
Your Maine Coon should stop immediately.
  2. After making the sound, very slowly move your hand away (while looking at them and showing you are not scared). This will help make your Maine Coon realize, biting is not okay for you.
  3. After repeating step 1 after ~10 times, if your Maine Coon needs more training, you can blow on their face so they can feel a distracting sensation.
  4. After they learn, you should just be able to say "owwww" and they will stop right away.

If the biting happens when he is overstimulated, giving them a toy to use as a kicker and/or bite-toy will help.

When it comes to biting things like cords, cats loathe orange peels.
