Steps to leash train your Maine Coon
TL;DR
- Carrier Training: Leave the carrier open at home. Use treats & praise to create a safe, familiar space. Essential for stress-free travel.
- Harness Training: Let them sniff the harness. Put it on loosely, reward with treats. Gradually increase wear time indoors. Never leave them unattended with it.
- Leash Training: Attach the leash indoors first. Start outdoors in a quiet spot. Let them exit the carrier at their own pace. Follow their lead, reward curiosity. Be patient.
Carrier Training

Carrier training should be the first step in getting your cat used to new experiences. 🎒
Keep the carrier open at home so they can explore at their own pace. Use treats and praise to reinforce positive associations. A carrier should feel like a safe retreat.
Harness & Leash Training

Introduce the harness gradually. Let your cat sniff it, then loosely place it on them with treats as rewards. Keep sessions short at first.
Ensure a snug but not tight fit—two fingers should fit under the straps. Never leave them unattended in a harness.
Leash Training

🌿 Choose a quiet location with little traffic, such as a backyard or park.
Start by placing your cat in their carrier at the new location and letting them exit at their own pace. Reward exploration with treats and praise.
Be patient! Some cats may take longer than others to feel comfortable outdoors. Repeat visits to the same spot will help build their confidence.
